Fix an Epson not printing black

Color prints fine but black is missing or faint. The black nozzle bank clogs first because it's used most — and air after a tank refill can block it too.

01 · Identify — does this match what you see?

  • Text comes out blank, grey, or striped
  • Colors print normally
  • Started right after a refill or a long idle period

02 · Resolve — follow in order

  1. 1

Run a Nozzle Check and confirm the black section has gaps or is missing entirely.

  2. 2

Run two Head Cleaning cycles, checking the pattern between each.

  3. 3

Check the black ink level — and on EcoTanks, confirm you actually refilled black, not a neighboring color.

  4. 4

If the printer sat idle, let it rest overnight, then clean once more.

  5. 5

As a last step, run Power Cleaning from the maintenance menu, then leave the printer off for 12 hours before retesting.

Pro tip

After a Power Cleaning, wait half a day before judging results. Fresh ink needs time to wick down to the nozzles.
