Fix “cartridge not recognized” on an Epson
The printer rejects a cartridge that's installed. Usually it's a protective film left on, a dirty chip, or a cartridge that isn't fully clicked in.
01 · Identify — does this match what you see?
- “Ink cartridge not recognized” message
- Happens right after installing a new cartridge
- Ink light on and printing blocked
02 · Resolve — follow in order
- 1
Remove the cartridge and check that the yellow tape or film over the vent is completely removed.
- 2
Reinsert firmly until it clicks — a half-seated cartridge reads as missing.
- 3
Wipe the gold chip on the cartridge with a dry lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints.
- 4
Power the printer off and on with the cartridge installed.
- 5
If it's a third-party cartridge and still fails, try a genuine Epson cartridge — some compatibles have unreliable chips after firmware updates.
Pro tip
Install cartridges quickly after removing the film. Exposed ink ports start drying within minutes and can clog before first use.
