Clear an ADF (document feeder) jam
When the auto document feeder grabs a page and stalls, the original is usually jammed in the feeder slot. Pull it out gently and clean the rollers.
01 · Identify — does this match what you see?
- “Document Jam” message during a multi-page scan
- Original stops halfway through the ADF
- Pages feed then skew and stall
02 · Resolve — follow in order
- 1
Open the ADF top cover (lift the front of the feeder unit).
- 2
Pull the jammed original gently in the feed direction — never tear it.
- 3
Check the small pick roller inside the ADF for torn paper scraps.
- 4
Wipe the roller with a damp cloth to restore grip.
- 5
Close the ADF, fan your originals, and re-feed them squarely against the guide.
Pro tip
Stapled or dog-eared originals jam the ADF. Remove staples and flatten corners before feeding — the ADF handles clean sheets far more reliably.
