Fix an Epson scanner that won't scan

Printing works but scanning fails. Scanning needs its own software path — Epson Scan 2 — and a firewall or missing driver breaks it while printing stays fine.

01 · Identify — does this match what you see?

  • “Cannot communicate with the scanner” error
  • Print works, scan doesn't
  • Scanner not listed on the computer

02 · Resolve — follow in order

  1. 1

Confirm the printer and computer are on the same network — check the printer's status sheet.

  2. 2

Download and install the full Epson Scan 2 package for your model from Epson's site, not just the print driver.

  3. 3

Temporarily disable firewall/VPN and try again; if it works, add Epson Scan 2 as an allowed app.

  4. 4

On the printer, restart it, then launch Epson Scan 2 and click “Refresh” to rediscover the scanner.

  5. 5

Still stuck? Connect by USB to confirm the scanner hardware works, then troubleshoot the network side.

Pro tip

VPNs are the number-one silent scanner killer — the scan tool can't see the printer while a VPN routes all traffic. Disconnect the VPN first.
