Clean inside the laser printer
Loose toner builds up inside a laser and causes grey background or speckles. A periodic clean of the drum area and corona wire keeps prints crisp.
01 · Identify — does this match what you see?
- Grey haze across the page background
- Random toner speckles on prints
- Printer hasn't been cleaned in a year
02 · Resolve — follow in order
- 1
Unplug the printer and let the fuser cool for 20 minutes.
- 2
Open the front cover and remove the drum-and-toner assembly.
- 3
Slide the green corona-wire tab fully left and right 6–7 times, then return it home.
- 4
Use a dry lint-free cloth to wipe loose toner from the drum cavity (not the drum cylinder itself).
- 5
Reinstall the assembly, close the cover, and print a few blank pages to clear any residue.
Pro tip
Vacuuming toner with a standard home vacuum is a bad idea — the fine powder blows straight through the filter. Use a damp cloth or a dedicated toner vacuum only.
