Resolve fuser error E50 / “Fuser Unit Error”

On a laser Brother, E50 or “Fuser Unit Error” means the fuser isn't reaching temperature. Often a cool-down needed, sometimes a real fuser fault.

01 · Identify — does this match what you see?

  • “Fuser Unit Error” or “E50” on screen
  • Printer stops mid-job and won't print
  • Recently printed many pages in a row

02 · Resolve — follow in order

  1. 1

Unplug the printer for at least 40 minutes — the fuser needs to fully cool and reset.

  2. 2

Reconnect and power on. If the error clears, it was an overheat trip from heavy use.

  3. 3

If it returns, open the back cover and inspect the fuser rollers for visible damage or torn paper.

  4. 4

Confirm you're using the correct paper type (thick cardstock overheats budget fusers).

  5. 5

If E50 persists after cooling, the fuser unit needs replacement — a service job on most models.

Pro tip

Heavy duplex jobs overheat the fuser. Break a 200-page job into batches of 50 with a 10-minute pause between them.
