Fix scanner error E52 / “Scanner Locked”
E52 or “Scanner Locked” means the scanner head can't move. There's a transport lock switch under the lid that gets left in the locked position after a move.
01 · Identify — does this match what you see?
- “Scanner Locked” or “E52” when you try to scan or copy
- Scanner lamp doesn't move
- Printer prints fine but scanning fails
02 · Resolve — follow in order
- 1
Lift the document cover and look under the scanner glass edge for a small switch marked LOCK/UNLOCK.
- 2
Slide it to UNLOCK. On some models the switch is on the back or underside.
- 3
Power the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and power back on.
- 4
Try a test scan from the panel (Scan → to PC, or Scan → to USB).
- 5
If the lamp moves but the error stays, gently press the scanner head to its home (rest) position with the lid open.
Pro tip
Always check the transport lock after moving house or shipping — it's the single most common scanner error on a Brother that just arrived.
