Resolve “Unable to Print 30”
“Unable to Print 30” (or 4F) on an inkjet Brother means the print head can't move or drive correctly. Often dried ink or a jammed carriage — try this before replacing anything.
01 · Identify — does this match what you see?
- “Unable to Print 30” or “Unable to Print 4F” on screen
- Printer won't print, copy, or scan
- Carriage may be stuck to one side
02 · Resolve — follow in order
- 1
Unplug the power cord while the printer is ON — this parks the head in the service position.
- 2
Open the scanner unit so you can see the ink cartridges and carriage.
- 3
Check nothing is blocking the carriage path: a jammed scrap of paper or a dropped cartridge.
- 4
Move the carriage gently left and right by hand to confirm it slides freely.
- 5
Plug back in, power on, and run a cleaning cycle (Ink → Cleaning) to re-prime the nozzles.
Pro tip
If 30/4F returns immediately after cleaning, the print head itself has failed. Replacement heads for MFC-J models are available, but compare the cost to a new printer first.
