Replace the waste toner box

Laser printers collect leftover toner in a waste toner box. When it's full, the printer halts. Swapping it is clean and quick if you keep it level.

01 · Identify — does this match what you see?

  • “Replace Waste Toner Box” on the panel
  • Printer refuses to print
  • Color laser that's done many cycles

02 · Resolve — follow in order

  1. 1

Open the front cover and locate the waste toner box (a small container, often beside or below the drum).

  2. 2

Pull it out straight, keeping it level to avoid spilling loose toner.

  3. 3

Insert the new waste toner box until it clicks.

  4. 4

Close the front cover — the message clears automatically on most models.

  5. 5

Seal the old box in a bag and dispose of it with toner waste recycling.

Pro tip

Don't empty a waste toner box to reuse it — the “full” sensor measures weight, and refilling still reads full. A new box is cheap and avoids the mess.
