Error 5100 — carriage cannot move

Something is physically stopping the carriage, or the strip it reads position from is dirty.

01 · Identify — does this match what you see?

  • 5100 on screen
  • Loud knocking at power-on
  • Carriage stuck to one side

02 · Resolve — follow in order

  1. 1

Turn off and unplug the printer.

  2. 2

Open the cover and slide the carriage gently by hand from side to side, feeling for anything in the way.

  3. 3

Remove scraps of paper, packing tape or the orange shipping locks fitted to new printers.

  4. 4

Find the clear plastic strip running behind the carriage and wipe it with a dry cloth — never with alcohol.

  5. 5

Close up, plug in and power on.

Pro tip

On a brand-new printer, 5100 nearly always means a piece of orange shipping tape is still fitted.
