Jobs take ages to start over Wi-Fi

The printing itself is fine; the delay is the job crossing a weak or busy network.

01 · Identify — does this match what you see?

  • Long pause before the first page
  • Fast over USB, slow over Wi-Fi
  • Large photos time out

02 · Resolve — follow in order

  1. 1

Check the signal strength on the printer's network status page. Below half, move the printer closer to the router.

  2. 2

Connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz band — it reaches further through walls than 5 GHz.

  3. 3

Print in Standard quality instead of High for everyday documents; the file sent is far smaller.

  4. 4

Turn off bidirectional or two-way communication in the driver if the delay is at the start of every job.

  5. 5

For very large jobs, connect a USB cable temporarily.

Pro tip

A printer sat behind a metal shelf or next to a microwave loses a lot of signal.
